Properties: White or off-white powder, insoluble in ethanol, stable in neutral solutions, hydrolyzed under strong acid and elevated temperatures, end groups can be oxidized in alkaline solutions. Easily soluble in water. Odorless, tasteless. Its solution can be sterilized by autoclaving at 100-115°C for 30-45 minutes. Dextran is found in the mucus secreted during the growth of certain microorganisms. Mainly composed of D-glucopyranose linked by α,1→ bonds, with branching points at 1→2, 1→3, 1→4 linkages. The structure varies depending on the type of microorganism and growth conditions.
Uses: Biochemical research. Cell studies, precipitin reactions, separation of leukocytes from whole blood. Immunological research. Permeability studies. Determination of inert colloidal occupied volume and biological cell wall volume.
